The 44th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is currently happening at Toronto, Canada where Joker movie was screened a few days back. The movie received great applause and reviews from critics and audience. The director of Joker, Todd Phillips, posted a short clip on Instagram of Joaquin Phoenix, the titular lead, on September 21, 2018. Since then, the movie has created quite a buzz among social media and fans. The character of Joker is iconic as well as controversial. The character has been played by many actors like Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto whose performances were praised for its sinister characterization. Joaquin Phoenix was no less. The 44-year-old actor was honored with the Tribute Award at TIFF recently. Joker also won the Golden Lion award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival last week.
Joaquin Phoenix remembered his younger brother River Phoenix, who died of combined drug intoxication in 1993 while receiving his award. River Phoenix was a young actor known for movies like My Own Private Idaho, Indiana Jones, and the Last Crusade and Dark Blood. River Phoenix was also an Academy Award nominee. Joaquin Phoenix made it a point to pay tribute to River Phoenix. Joaquin Phoenix mentioned that Joker might be the best experience of his career and he is undoubtedly thankful to River Phoenix for motivating him. Early experiences as a child actor left Joaquin Phoenix skeptical about the movie industry.
He comically started his speech saying his publicist told him he is receiving an award and he simply replied he is in for it, which later turned emotional as he spoke about River Phoenix. He talked about people who had a profound influence on his career. Soon, he recalled an incident from when he was 15 or 16, and River made him watch the movie, Raging Bull. “You’re gonna start acting again. He didn’t ask me, he told me,” said Joaquin Phoenix as he remembered his brother being the one to push him into acting again gently.
The movie is already generating Oscar buzz. DC fans might have a satisfying film delivered by the DCEU after the Justice League letdown. Fans are looking forward to watching the movie in theatres starting October 4.
