‘Mr. Robot’s author will execute and produce the new take, with a search underway for a writer on the straight-to-series drama.

NBC Universal’s recently named streaming service, Peacock, is revisiting Battlestar Galactica with a new, straight-to-series take from Mr. Robot author Sam Esmail, set as part of its original content lineup. Peacock will also be the on-air home for Ron Moore’s Syfy takes Battlestar Galactica.

Details about a new take on the beloved drama are being kept under the wraps, though sources tell ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ that it will be an update, more modern look at the world as told through the lens of the science Fiction favorite. The modernized Battlestar Galactica, sources reveal it will be inspired by 2004 Syfy’s series, developed by Ron Moore, and not based on the 1978 initial from author Glen A. Larson.

Esmail is involved with executive produce. A writer has not yet been employed — the drama showers from Universal Content Productions, where Esmail remains under an overall agreement. UCP produced the initial series. Esmail’s manager, Chad Hamilton, at Anonymous Content who will also be an executive producer.

Larson’s initial BSG, starring Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict, ran for one series in the late ’70s before being canceled. A fan campaign marched to a 10-episode revival, Galactica 1980.
