Cinema is a motion picture that is generally broadcasted to the public at large on a large platform, generally theatres. The audience generally surrenders themselves to the film and watch it uninterruptedly. This is why movies are always known as the greatest influencers. A message given in a movie reaches the public at large and also the visuals often are stored in the minds of the public.
In a recent interview, legendary director Martin Scorsese made some unpleasant remarks about the Marvel Universe’s Avengers series. He was initially asked whether he saw the Avengers movie, for which he bluntly replied: “But thats not cinema.” “Those movies are nothing more than theme parks,” he expressed. He opined that it is not the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.
Well, that’s harsh and not expecting…!!!
Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing film in the history of cinemas, and those Superhero’s and their combined films have a massive cult base fan following all around the world. So naturally, Martin’s comments are not received smoothly.
Wonder if he apologies for those comments? Will his comments have any negative impact on his upcoming movie, The Irishman?
But on the other side, Martin is not entirely wrong as well. As movies have significant influence on people, and there are no morals in Superhero films. Though some of the recent movies like The Black Panther contain some emotional and psychological experiences, they are mainly about VFX and action. Nevertheless, Action is the most loved genre, and if movies are watched for entertainment, What Martin said doesn’t really matter.
He certainly made some sensitive comments.
