Celebrities often say or do stupid and problematic things that anger their fans as well as others. They knowingly or unknowingly say anything sexist, racist, homophobic, or transphobic and then issue an apology for damage control. The latest to fall under this scandal is Gina Rodriguez. Mainly known for her role as Jane in CW’s Jane The Virgin, the 35-year-old actress, and producer was last seen in Miss Bala and Netflix’s Someone Great. Rodriguez posted an Instagram story of her singing to the song, Ready or Not by Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean while getting ready.
Apparently, the Instagram story was deleted after three hours. But before being removed, it was already shared on various social media platforms and became a trending news on Twitter. She was called out for being racist towards Black people. Enraged fans tweeted saying she cares so much about Latina rights, then why is she so insensitive towards Black people. Gina Rodriguez is a Latina rights activist.
She was announced as a new member of the HSF’s (Hispanic Scholarship Fund) Board of Directors. The HSF is the United States’ most prominent non-profit organization which supports Hispanic American higher education. Because attaining an education was the biggest priority in Rodriguez’s household, coupled with her determination to work towards a degree, she was able to work towards receiving an HSF scholarship.
Hence, many people called her out for her hypocrisy. Soon, Rodriguez uploaded an Instagram story apologizing for using the n-word while singing. She also posted an apology in written form later. She just said she is a huge Fugees fan and didn’t mean to offend anyone by singing the song. She admitted that she still has a lot to learn about and grow. However, the apology only added more fuel to the fire. She received backlash on social media for being ignorant about the history of Black people.
