Another atrocity has been committed against a girl child. This time the one who was responsible for the murder of the child was her own mother. Rajeshwari, 42 of age, burnt her own 13-year-old daughter Marichelvi alive after she refused to go to school on Wednesday in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
Marichelvi was a 6th-grade student, who was a slow learner and not the brightest of minds in aspects of academics, which was the reason why she wanted to discontinue school. She was enrolled in a government aid school, which provided a hostel in Manthithoppu. Marichelvi did not want to study in that school any longer, which is why she decided to return home.
On 11th June 2012, a few days after Marichelvi’s school reopened, she returned home from her hostel. After reaching home, she got into a heated argument with Rajeshwari, who was infuriated at the moment. Rajeshwari told her daughter to go back to school, but she refused and was hellbent on staying home.
Rajeshwari seemed to dislike the decision of her daughter and poured a considerable amount of kerosene on her daughter, and mercilessly burnt her alive without any remorse or sympathy for her burning daughter. The father of Marichelvi, Gopal, was asleep at that time and woke up to the cries of her daughter and rushed to help her and took her to a hospital.
After Gopal reached the hospital with his daughter, the hospital reported that she suffered 75% burns throughout her body. After fighting death for a considerable amount of time, Marichelvi eventually succumbed to her burns and injuries and died at Kovilpatti hospital on 1st October 2012.
Rajeshwari faces life imprisonment in the Mahila court. The sentenced was given by Judge C Kumar Saravanan, who charged her with a fine of 5000 rupees. Currently, Rajeshwari is in prison, repenting for the sins that she has committed.
