DC has been revving up the metaphorical engine in 2020 with a slew of films already lined up. Now, the quirky Shazam has also thrown in its hat
If Asher Angel is to be believed, Shazam! 2 filming is about to start “really soon.” Talking to ET Live, Angel said that he hasn’t got his hands on the script yet, but has hinted at the movie’s imminent return. “super excited” to return to the DC Comics universe and reunite with Levi in the sequel set for April 2022. He also confirmed that his costar, Zachary Levi, would be reprising his role as the superpowered version of Billy Batson.
Under director Sandberg’s capable hands, Shazam struck gold in the box office, raking in $364 million worldwide, low budget notwithstanding.
Previously in an interview with the Associated Press, Levi mentioned that it was expected that the production process would start by late spring or early summer 2020. He emphasized that Warner Bros were keen on beginning filming “as soon as possible” because of 17-year-old Angel and 16-year-old co-star Jack Dylan Grazer.
Levi said that he didn’t “really know anything” about Shazam 2 when asked in summer. He said, however, that he did know that “everybody who’s involved in all of the decision makings” was happy with what they had all done before and wanted to improve upon that in the sequel.
Levi said that he did know that the main reason for making the movie as soon as possible was because the teenage cast was “growing up like weeds” and, so, if we don’t do that in like the next two days, they’re going to be full-grown adults.”
Despite being tightly lipped about the sequel, Sandberg has previously hinted that there would be more focus on the “Shazamily” — Billy’s foster siblings who can tap into similar powers.
He said that they could “explore how they work as a family of heroes.” For that end, they added an after-credits scene with Mister Mind to keep the possibilities open. He suggested introducing another villain won’t be that implausible as well.
