Genital Mutilation practices have been very common in the region of Africa and Middle East and Egypt is no exception. The practice has been termed as a criminal offence in the country but also, it has been widespread in the region. The 12-year-old in southern Egypt died after her parents allegedly took her to a doctor for undergoing female genital mutilation.
The horrible details were revealed by the Egypt’s judicial authority and also they have arrested the parents involved. The incident occurred in the province of Assiut in southern Egypt. The public prosecutor from the nation is believed to have given the order of the arrest of vile parents and the medical personnel involved.
The practice also called as circumcision, has been effective in the country since 90s and still it has strong influence in the deep rooted conservative communities. When the bill about banning circumcision passed in 2007, various conservative communities opposed the move however it was passed later. But also, according to a survey conducted by reputable government surveyor in the country, about 87% of the total women in age between 19 to 49 have already circumcised.
After the news spread through the country, Amel Fahmy, who is the MD of Tadwein Gender Research Center, reported that if the country doesn’t pass proper and more stable and clear strategy and procedures to cope the problem, more and more number of innocent girl like that 12-year-old will face same problem.
Back in 2016, the lawmakers in Egypt passed another amendment that would punish the person involved in Female Genital Mutilation. The offenders would be detained for a misdemeanour and then would be sentenced around two years in prison. But various human rights and women rights advocates have shown dissatisfaction towards the amendment.
According to some renowned women rights advocates, the offenders could easily escape if they claim that they had just removed an unwanted skin from the body. The human rights advocates called this amendment a huge medical injustice.
The parents and the physician in this 12-year-old kids are still held behind the bars and the court scheduled any date for further legal proceedings.
