HBO has given a thumbs up to the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. It is a prequel to the popular series.
Ryan Condal is writing the new prequel based on George R.R. Martin’s 2019 book Fire and Blood. It is a history of House Targaryen, who was Daenerys’s ancestors as they fight through a civil war on the continent. House of the Dragon will be a 10 episode project set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. We also know that George R.R. Martin is going to be the co-executive producer of the show.
Before revealing the title, Martin blogged, “The show stirring up all the internet headlines right now is one of the other [successor shows]. Also a prequel. Set thousands of years after Jane [Goldman] ‘s ‘s show in the history of Westeros.”
Will we see any cast members from Game of Thrones?
It is very unlikely that we will see any cast member from Game of Thrones since the prequel is set 300 years before the events of the original show. However, we would definitely be seeing the ancestors of the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and other families that we are familiar with. And we would definitely be able to catch Aegon “the Conqueror” Targaryen, his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, and of course the famously large dragon Balerion the Black Dread.
Game of Thrones Spinoff Expected Release Date Airing date
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said that House of the Dragons is likely to air in 2022. However, no specific date can be given yet.
HBO had been working on a number of prequels, including one written by Jane Goldman, starring Naomi Watts. However, it was nixed after an untitled pilot.
