A film which was a massive moment in history for Disney is set to make its mark again.
The movie is loosely based on Hanse Christian Anderson’s Danish story of the same name. Well, to those who haven’t yet seen this masterpiece and who have forgotten what it was. Let’s look back to the original version. The movie Little Mermaid revolves around the life of Ariel. She is a mermaid princess in the Kingdom of Atlantica. The princess falls in love with a human prince and exchanges her beautiful voice for human legs. Her quest to find Eric is the main plotline of the series.
The 1989 version was a huge success, and it prompted two more sequels. It was also made into a series and inspired many of Disney’s future projects.
Disney is up to make a total live-action version of the animated film. The remake has been in the books for a few years. The success of the similar remake of Lion King may have prompted them to go ahead with the project. Lion King remake, which released in 2019, grossed over a billion worldwide.
The remake started making noise when Disney announced on July 3, 2019, that singer Halle Bailey would play the role of princess Ariel. The director of the film Rob Marshall said that “Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, hear youth, innocence and substance-plus a glorious singing voice-all intrinsic qualities necessary to play the iconic role. Many criticized the casting, and a #notmyariel campaign began on social media.
Disney rubbished the racist backlash, and many, including Jodi Benson, came in support of the casting. Jodi Benson gave the voice to ariel in the 1989 version.
The film is not going to be an animated one. So, there’s going to be real live actors and plenty of CGI in the movie. Jonah Hauer King accompanies Halle as Prince Eric. Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina will play the role of the seagull Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem as King Triton.
Disney hasn’t officially announced a release date, but the shooting will begin in 2020. And the release will be in late 2020 or the beginning of 2021. The movie naturally should take its time given the production works and CGI effects. Nevertheless, the fans are ready to wait for the movie. Some of the older ones want that nostalgic one, and the new generation wants another trip to Disney’s wonderland. So no matter how long they wait, they expect nothing less than another masterpiece from Disney.
